Student Interviews

I really learned a lot from conducting and reading my student interview questionnaire. I asked very broad questions, but the two students I chose were from very different backgrounds. I wanted to see if their home life and hobbies could have affected their grades. While the students listened very well in class to my oral instruction, one of the students struggled and one did not when it came to written assessment. I taught a spelling review game that differed from their normal routine for spelling review. I then gave the spelling test, and the two students' scores were no different than their scores before my instruction. I truly believe that issues at home and parent involvement have a lot to do with the way my students perform.

  1. It could be issues at home. It could also be your instruction. It could also be learning differences. Your struggling students could have a learning difference that makes it difficult to spell. Thankfully poor spelling is not a sign of intelligence nor is good spelling necessary for good writing. Good spelling doesn't even count for much on the WESTEST!
